Based on the manga by Shogo Sugitani [Ningen Plamo], the film is set in the cinema-themed city of "Nyallywood" and depicts the love and madness of those involved in filmmaking. To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the film — which has continued to enjoy strong popularity since its theatrical release in June 2021 — a one-week revival screening titled "Pompo Has Returned!" will take place at three theaters (Shinjuku Piccadilly, Midland Square Cinema, Namba Parks Cinema) from Friday, May 29 through Thursday, June 4, 2026. As an audience gift, a "5th Anniversary Celebration Illustration Card" newly drawn by original creator Shogo Sugitani [Ningen Plamo] will be distributed.
Additionally, a 5th anniversary commemorative stage greeting will be held at the 11:00 screening (after the film) at Shinjuku Piccadilly on Sunday, May 31, 2026. Konomi Kohara (voice of Pompo), director Takayuki Hirao, and production producer Ryoichiro Matsuo will appear to share memories and behind-the-scenes stories. Tickets with the stage greeting will be available via Ticket Pia\'s pre-reservation starting at 11:00 on Tuesday, May 12.
Furthermore, in conjunction with the 5th anniversary, the latest information on "WASTED CHEF (tentative title)" — the first original animation project from director Takayuki Hirao and the Pompo team — will also be unveiled. Updates will be announced at the 5th anniversary stage greeting on May 31, and a teaser of the new work will premiere during the revival screenings starting May 29.
Animation studio CLAP has also opened an official TikTok account and started posting clip highlights from "Pompo: The Cinephile" leading up to the 5th anniversary.
