Theatrical feature released by Toho in April 1988 as a double-bill with My Neighbor Totoro, produced by Studio Ghibli. Director Isao Takahata adapts Akiyuki Nosaka's Naoki Prize-winning novella, depicting young Seita and his little sister Setsuko who lose their mother in an air raid and try to survive in a bomb shelter near the end of the war in Kobe. Scored by Yoshio Mamiya, the heart-rending classic stands as a milestone of antiwar animation.
