First-season OVA series whose volume one was released in April 1988, animated by Studio Deen. Originally conceived by the Headgear group of Masami Yuki, Kazunori Ito, Yutaka Izubuchi, Akemi Takada and Mamoru Oshii, the show is set in near-future Tokyo where Special Vehicles Section 2 Division 2 of the Metropolitan Police battles crime committed with humanoid Labors. Director Mamoru Oshii blends grounded mecha realism with character drama; its 4,800-yen list price was groundbreaking, around half that of standard OVAs.
