Legend of the Forest

もりのでんせつ

Aired: 1988

Experimental short animation released in February 1988, produced by Tezuka Productions. Personally directed by Osamu Tezuka and conceived as his answer to Disney's Fantasia. Set to Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4, the film unfolds across two completed movements, the first parodying the history of animation itself and the fourth offering a sweeping ode to nature and humanity's place within it. Originally planned as a four-part suite, only the first and fourth movements were finished during Tezuka's lifetime, with his son Macoto Tezka later completing the second movement. A condensed reflection of Tezuka's philosophy and a milestone in Japanese animation history.
