In the brutal ground combat of the Battle of Okinawa, the young girl Ryuko, separated from her family, wanders clutching a white flag, and through her the film earnestly portrays the terror children suffer at war's mercy and the weight of survival. Directed by Tetsu Dezaki, the work carries a prayer-like tone passing the meaning of peace from war-experienced generations to those born afterward, standing as a representative anti-war animation set in Okinawa.
