An OVA directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by Gainax. It begins from a parody premise that grafts the format of the sports manga Aim for the Ace! onto a space robot anime, then traces the growth of high school girl Noriko Takaya into a space fighter pilot battling space monsters, layered with hard SF concepts including relativistic time dilation. The overwhelming catharsis of its climax, together with Kohei Tanaka's score and Noriko Sakai's theme song, ignited a legendary fervour, making it a defining youth-oriented SF robot work.
