Aired from October 3, 1982 to June 26, 1983 on MBS/TBS network, 36 episodes total. The series revolutionized the robot anime genre by fusing it with romance and idol culture, depicting the Earth-Zentradi alien war centered on the crashed space battleship Macross, with a love triangle among pilot Hikaru Ichijo, idol singer Lynn Minmay, and officer Misa Hayase. The unique premise that 'song' could change the course of war became the core element of all subsequent Macross works. Originally planned for 23 episodes, it was extended to 36 due to strong toy sales.
