Anime film produced by Toei Animation and distributed by Toei Eiga, an original SF war anime exploring the possibility of nuclear war between the US and USSR during the Cold War. Released October 30, 1982, 125 minutes long. The provocative work tensely depicts how American and Soviet military actions and political decisions accidentally escalate into World War III. Due to a labor union boycott at Toei Animation, much of the animation work was outsourced. Seiji Yokoyama's heavy score and the theme song 'Ai Yue ni Kanashiku' performed by Popura (lyrics: Michio Yamagami, music: Shinsuke Kazato) capture the Cold War anxiety. (C)Toei Animation
