Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow

きどうせんしがんだむつー あいせんしへん

Aired: 1981

A theatrical anime film produced by Nippon Sunrise and distributed by Shochiku. The second installment in director Yoshiyuki Tomino's three-part theatrical re-edit of the 1979-1980 TV series 'Mobile Suit Gundam,' covering the show's middle arc from the eulogy for Garma Zabi through the Battle of Odessa and culminating in the Zeon offensive against the Earth Federation's underground base of Jaburo. Amuro Ray's wavering relationship to the war, the exhaustion and resolve of the White Base crew, and intense Mobile Suit duels against Ramba Ral, the Black Tri-Stars, and the elusive Char Aznable are presented in newly edited form with substantial new animation and music. The film's theme song 'Ai Senshi' (Soldiers of Sorrow) and insert song 'Kaze ni Hitori de,' both composed and performed by Daisuke Inoue, remain enduring classics of anime music and are widely credited with launching Gundam into the national consciousness and igniting the franchise's permanent cultural status.
