Adieu Galaxy Express 999: Last Stop Andromeda

Aired: 1981

A theatrical anime film produced by Toei Doga (now Toei Animation) and distributed by Toei. The second feature film in the Galaxy Express 999 series and a direct sequel to the 1979 theatrical original, this adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's iconic manga returns young Tetsuro Hoshino to the stars: now older and harder, he reunites with the mysterious Maetel and once again boards the celestial steam train 999, bound for its true final destination - the heart of Andromeda - amid the climactic war between organic humanity and the Machine Empire. Sweeping space opera vistas, the deepening mystery of Maetel's origins, and Tetsuro's painful coming-of-age are scored to grand symphonic music. The film famously closes with American singer Mary MacGregor's English-language ballad 'SAYONARA,' an unusual choice for the era that gave the picture an internationally cosmopolitan air.
