A television anime produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (now TMS Entertainment) and broadcast on Nippon Television. A super-robot SF drama loosely inspired by Mitsuteru Yokoyama's manga 'Mars,' the series radically reimagines its source as the saga of Takeru Myojin, a young alien implanted on Earth as a living bomb meant to destroy humanity. Choosing his adopted home over his programming, Takeru reclaims his true name 'Mars' and awakens the five hidden mecha guardians (Gaiya, Sphinx, Uranus, Titan and Sin) whose sixfold fusion with himself forms the colossal super robot God Mars, with which he battles the despotic alien Emperor Zuul. The series is best remembered for the heart-breaking arc of Takeru's twin brother Marg, culminating in the seminal Episode 27 'Sorrowful Brother Star' - one of the all-time tearjerker episodes in Japanese anime history. The opening 'Uchu no Ouja! God Mars,' famously launched by Kazuho Hiura's piercing battle cry, has become a permanent classic of the super-robot anison canon.
