Space Runaway Ideon
でんせつきょしんいでおん
Aired: 1980 - 1981
A television anime produced by Nippon Sunrise and broadcast on Tokyo 12 Channel (now TV Tokyo), this giant-robot series was the very next project Yoshiyuki Tomino directed after 'Mobile Suit Gundam' wrapped its initial television run. As an original Sunrise property, Ideon pushed the so-called real-robot lineage in a strikingly philosophical and mythic direction. When the Third Interplanetary Survey Team unearths the colossal mecha Ideon and its associated craft from the ruins of the planet Solo, it triggers an unstoppable conflict with the Buff Clan, while the ancient energy known as the Ide - dwelling within the machine itself - reveals a will of its own that seems destined to consume humanity and Buff Clan alike. Koichi Sugiyama's stately score, Isao Taira's opening 'Fukkatsu no Ideon,' Keiko Toda's ending 'Cosmos ni Kimi to' and Tomino's unsparing storytelling laid the direct groundwork for the climactic theatrical features 'Contact' and 'Be Invoked' to follow.
