GeGeGe no Kitaro (1980 Film)
げげげのきたろう
Aired: 1980
A theatrical anime produced by Toei Animation and released within Toei's Summer Vacation Toei Manga Festival. Based on Shigeru Mizuki's nationally beloved yokai manga, it is a short work created by blowing up and re-editing episode 37 of the 1971-72 second television series for theatrical screening. Kitaro, the last boy of the Ghost Tribe born from a grave, confronts yokai that harm humans together with his companion Medama-oyaji and Nezumi-otoko, upholding justice between the worlds of humans and yokai. As the film version of a representative work of the Mizuki world that depicts Japanese yokai culture in an earthy and lyrical manner, it adorned one segment of the manga festival. No new theme song was produced; the second television series theme song GeGeGe no Kitaro continued to be used.
