Makoto-chan

まことちゃん

Aired: 1980

A theatrical anime produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and distributed by Toho, adapting the unconventional gag manga that horror master Kazuo Umezu serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday. It depicts the daily life of the kindergartener Makoto-chan, who runs wild with intense crude jokes, runaway gags, and bizarre behavior that drags everyone around him in, rendered with the black, nonsensical humor characteristic of Umezu. The film adaptation of a socially phenomenal hit that thrilled children of the era, with surreal developments beyond common sense and Makoto-chan's trademark Guwashi pose. It is also known for the fact that the original author Kazuo Umezu himself handled the lyrics, composition, and singing of the theme songs.
