Galaxy Express 999 (Film)
ぎんがてつどうすりーないん
Aired: 1979
A theatrical anime produced by Toei Animation and distributed by Toei, directed by Rintaro, the first Galaxy Express 999 film. Based on the science-fiction manga of the same name that Leiji Matsumoto serialized in Shonen Gahosha's Shonen King, it was newly reconstructed as a theatrical work from the Fuji TV television series. Tetsuro Hoshino, a boy whose mother was killed by the Count Mecha, heads for a planet where mechanical bodies can be obtained for free, boarding the galactic super-express 999 together with the mysterious beauty Maetel and setting out into the vast cosmos. Through encounters and partings with various planets and people, and confronting the truth surrounding mechanical bodies, the film depicts on a grand scale how Tetsuro grows from a boy into an adult. With distribution earnings of 1.65 billion yen, it topped the 1979 Japanese box office and, along with Godiego's theme song, became a social phenomenon, standing as a landmark in the history of Japanese anime film.
