A TV anime produced by Nippon Animation, adapting L. M. Montgomery's novel Anne of Green Gables. Broadcast in 50 episodes on Fuji TV's World Masterpiece Theater slot, it was directed by Isao Takahata with scene design and screen composition by Hayao Miyazaki. The orphan girl Anne Shirley is mistakenly taken in at Green Gables, where the initially baffled, taciturn siblings Matthew and Marilla come to love her deeply. Through friendship and rivalry with Diana Barry and Gilbert Blythe, Anne carves out her own life with rich imagination and optimism.
