A TV anime produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, broadcast in 26 episodes on the Nippon TV network. Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure novel Treasure Island, it follows the boy Jim Hawkins, who comes into possession of a map to pirate treasure and sets sail for the island alongside a band of unruly men including the one-legged cook Long John Silver. The dramatic visual expression of director Osamu Dezaki and character designer Akio Sugino was highly praised, deeply etching a human drama of a boy's growth and his complex bond with Silver into the original adventure tale. With music by Kentaro Haneda, it is known for weighty storytelling that transcends the bounds of children's programming.
