Hiromi Oka, an ordinary girl who joins the elite Nishi High tennis club, grows into a first-class player in body and mind through the harsh coaching of the demanding Jin Munakata and encounters with rivals and seniors. The dramatic screen composition under director Osamu Dezaki and the storytelling that confronts the pressure of competition and the conflicts of youth head-on were highly praised, making it considered one of the peaks of sports-spirit anime. It is also known for its social influence in boosting the tennis boom.
