A TV anime produced by Nippon Animation, based on the shojo manga by Waki Yamato. Set in a Tokyo redolent of Taisho romanticism, it unfolds as a Taisho-era romantic comedy centered on Benio Hanamura, a tomboyish schoolgirl fond of kendo and sake, and Shinobu Ijuin, the handsome Imperial Army lieutenant chosen as her betrothed, as they repeatedly miss and reunite with one another. Against the backdrop of the Great Kanto Earthquake and turbulent times, it depicts, comically and dramatically, the lively, forthright Benio growing while wavering between love and independence. Bringing to the screen the appeal of an original that presented a new image of women living in a new era, it is a celebrated shojo anime that later led to a theatrical film adaptation.
