A TV anime produced by Nippon Animation (Zuiyo Eizo), based on Ouida's "A Dog of Flanders" (1872). In late 19th-century Flanders near Antwerp, orphan Nello lives in poverty with his elderly grandfather Jehan, delivering milk. He rescues an abandoned dying old dog Patrasche and takes him in as family, while dreaming of becoming a painter inspired by Rubens. Despite false accusations, a failed art competition, and his grandfather's death, he is supported by his friendship with Aloise. The final cathedral scene became one of the most moving moments in Japanese anime history. The first work of what became the World Masterpiece Theater series. 52 episodes.
