A long-running TV anime produced by Toei Doga (Toei Animation), based on legends of the historical Zen monk Ikkyu Sojun's youth. Set in Muromachi-era Kyoto's Ankokuji Temple, young Ikkyu—secret son of Emperor Go-Komatsu separated from his mother and placed in the temple at age six—uses wit and clever puzzles ("tonchi") to solve daily problems and outwit adults. Famous tonchi stories like "Do Not Cross This Bridge" and "Tiger on the Folding Screen" appear in self-contained episodes. Beloved by children and adults across 296 episodes. Massively popular in Chinese-speaking regions as "Smart Ikkyu."
