In the year 2199, Earth's oceans have dried from Gamilas planet bomb attacks, with humanity facing extinction in one year from radiation contamination. Captain Juzo Okita's Earth Defense Force crew board the Space Battleship Yamato—refitted from the WWII battleship's wreckage—to journey 148,000 light-years to planet Iscandar for the Cosmo Cleaner D radiation device. Susumu Kodai, Daisuke Shima, Yuki Mori, Shiro Sanada, Doctor Sado, and Analyzer endure the 296,000-light-year round trip against Gamilas pursuit. The first major SF space drama in TV anime history, it sparked a social phenomenon and led the anime boom. Hiroshi Miyagawa's score remains beloved. 26 episodes.
