A legendary spo-kon anime produced by Mushi Production, based on the manga by Asao Takamori (Ikki Kajiwara) and Tetsuya Chiba in Weekly Shonen Magazine. Wandering rough youth Joe Yabuki arrives at Tokyo's Sanya skid row, awakens to boxing through meeting drunken ex-pro Danpei Tange, and pursues professional boxing through fateful rivalry with Toru Rikiishi. Covering up to Rikiishi's death, the series established Osamu Dezaki's directorial signatures: still frames, harmony processing, and high-contrast staging. Rikiishi's death famously prompted an actual funeral ceremony at Kodansha Hall by devoted viewers. 79 episodes.
