Mahou no Mako-chan

A magical girl anime produced by Toei Doga (Toei Animation), adapted from Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" by Shinobu Urakawa and Toei's planning department. Mermaid princess Mako, who falls in love with the drowning youth Akira Urashima, makes a deal with the sea witch to become human and live on land. The third Toei magical girl series following "Mahou Tsukai Sally" and "Himitsu no Akko-chan," establishing the formula of non-human heroines coming to land for love—the prototype for romance in later magical girl anime. The bittersweet ending was unusual for children's anime. 48 episodes.
