Himitsu no Akko-chan (1969 TV Series)

Aired: 1969 - 1970

A TV anime produced by Toei Doga (now Toei Animation). Based on Fujio Akatsuka's manga serialized in Shueisha's Ribon magazine, with the first part running from June 1962 to September 1965 and a fresh re-serialization timed to the broadcast running from November 1968 to December 1969. Broadcast in 94 episodes on the NET network (now TV Asahi) from January 6, 1969 to October 26, 1970. Akko (voiced by Yoshiko Ota), an elementary school girl who receives a magical compact from the spirit of a mirror that lets her transform into anything, navigates daily life with her classmates and family. The spells 'Tekumaku Mayakon' and 'Ramipasu Ramipasu Rurururu' were coined by screenwriter Shun'ichi Yukimuro and quickly took hold among children of the era. The second work in Toei's Majokko (magical girl) series, it averaged 19.8% in ratings with a peak of 27.8%, establishing one of the archetypes of the transforming heroine genre.
