A TV anime produced by Tatsunoko Production. Created by Tatsuo Yoshida, with manga versions serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday and Weekly Shonen Jump. Broadcast in 26 episodes on Fuji TV every Wednesday at 19:00 from April 2 to September 24, 1969. A judo road movie in which the protagonist Sanshiro Kurenai (voiced by Ikuo Nishikawa), a master of jujutsu, travels by motorcycle in pursuit of the 'One-Eyed Man' who killed his father, taking on local martial artists across the world in mixed-style combat. The first martial arts work from Tatsunoko, it carved out a direction in action-oriented anime that the studio would later pursue with Casshern and Hurricane Polymar. Average viewership was 11.8 percent. Produced in color. A digitally remastered DVD-BOX was released in 2012. (C)Tatsunoko Production
