Yuyake Bancho

Aired: 1968 - 1969

A TV anime produced by Tokyo TV Doga. Based on the manga by Ikki Kajiwara (story) and Toshio Shoji (art) serialized in Akita Shoten's Bokenoh magazine (later moved to Weekly Shonen Champion). Broadcast in a daily 5-minute segment format on the Nippon TV network from September 30, 1968 to March 29, 1969, for a total of 156 installments (roughly equivalent to 26 standard episodes). Akagi Chuji (voiced by Midori Kato), an undefeated delinquent boy, takes on rival bancho (boss) figures and violent organizations across the country while upholding an inner code of chivalry and friendship in this downtown delinquent drama. The original manga is one of Ikki Kajiwara's representative works and helped establish a lineage of delinquent manga and ninkyo (chivalrous) anime. The casting of Midori Kato in the lead male role is also noteworthy. (C)Ikki Kajiwara, Toshio Shoji / Akita Shoten / Nippon TV / Tokyo TV Doga
