Mahotsukai Sally (1966 TV Series)

Aired: 1966 - 1968

A TV anime produced by Toei Doga. Based on Mitsuteru Yokoyama's manga 'Mahotsukai Sunny' serialized in Shueisha's Ribbon magazine (July 1966 - October 1967), with the title changed to 'Sally' due to trademark issues. Broadcast in 109 episodes on the NET (now TV Asahi) network from December 5, 1966 to December 30, 1968, with the first 17 episodes in monochrome and the rest in color from episode 18 onward. Princess Sally of the magic kingdom (voiced by Michiko Hirai) longs for the human world and arrives in a town on Earth, befriending elementary schoolgirls Yoshiko (voiced by Midori Kato) and Sumire (voiced by Sachiko Chijimatsu), and resolving daily incidents through magic together with her brother Kab and companion Poron. As the first work in the 'Toei Witch Girl Series' and Japan's first full-fledged magical girl TV anime, it is positioned as the foundational source of the magical girl genre lineage leading to Himitsu no Akko-chan, Mako-chan, Sailor Moon, and Cardcaptor Sakura. A color remake (second series) was produced in 1989. (C)Hikari Production / Toei Animation
