Manga News
Aired: 1957 - 1959
A TV anime produced by Nippon Television Network's news division. Broadcast in the 5-minute time slot from Monday through Saturday on the Nippon Television network from October 1, 1957 to September 30, 1959. Contemporary manga artists including Takashi Yanase, Yoji Kuri, Taizo Yokoyama, and Ryohei Yanagihara rotated daily for the artwork, with the day's news produced and broadcast on the same day using still manga and partial cutout animation. Accompanying music was composed originally each episode by young composers including Naozumi Yamamoto. Weekly Yomiuri at the time classified it not as a children's program but as a social program, but later anime history research positions it as the first domestically-produced Japanese television anime program. It was renewed and retitled Manga Shock on June 10, 1959. Although video materials no longer exist, it is recorded as the starting point of Japanese TV anime history.
