Boy Chakuro, living on the giant ship Mud Whale floating on a sea of sand, encounters emotionless girl Lykos on a drifting abandoned vessel. The Mud Whale residents possess supernatural powers called thymia but have short lifespans and are isolated from the outside world. The empire soon launches attacks threatening their existence.
