In a near future where humanity faces extinction from the alien entity Festum, teenagers living on the remote island of Tatsumiyajima pilot giant humanoid weapons called Fafners to protect their home and comrades. The series portrays the heavy toll of war as peaceful daily life transforms into a brutal battlefield, depicting growth, inner conflict, and loss through its ensemble cast. Tow Ubukata handled the series composition, and the franchise expanded into theatrical films and OVAs over the following years.
