Hoshi-sama no Rail
Aired: 1993
An anti-war feature adapted from actress Chitose Kobayashi's autobiographical children's novel, directed by Toshio Hirata and produced at Madhouse. Set in the closing days of the Pacific War, the film follows a Japanese family living near the Korean-Manchurian border as the empire collapses and they are forced into a long, harrowing repatriation through famine, freezing winters, and the loss of loved ones. Filtered through the eyes of the young girl Chiiko, its soft visuals and quiet narration deliver the violence of war as a whispered, lasting ache rather than spectacle, making it one of Madhouse's most heartfelt pleas for peace.
