Hashire Melos

A theatrical anime adaptation of Osamu Dazai's classic short story, set in ancient Syracuse. The story follows the shepherd Melos, who pleads with the tyrant Dionysius for permission to attend his sister's wedding before his own execution, leaving his closest friend Selinuntius behind as a hostage and vowing to return by the appointed hour. The film traces Melos's relentless run home and back across plague, flood, and despair, dramatizing the limits of conviction and friendship. Directed by Masaaki Osumi with character designs and animation direction by a young Hiroyuki Okiura, the production renders ancient Mediterranean landscapes and inner emotional currents with serious craftsmanship. The casting of pop idol Akina Nakamori as the heroine Reisa drew added attention to this thoughtful literary adaptation.
