In a barren world dominated by the religious state of Rodoid, the young hero Ran crosses paths with the enigmatic girl Aha and gradually uncovers the truth behind a colossal incoming meteor known as the Holocaust, a discovery with implications spanning the cosmos. Combining mythic overtones and an apocalyptic premise with the sharp animation of bright young talents such as Takeshi Koike, the three-part OVA earned acclaim as a distinctly auteurist 1990s science-fiction project. Its arid, cinematic landscapes and propulsive score have given the work a lasting cult reputation that endures with later generations of OVA enthusiasts.
