Trapp Ikka Monogatari
Aired: 1991
A Nippon Animation entry in the World Masterpiece Theater tradition, drawn from Maria von Trapp's memoir, which also inspired the musical The Sound of Music. Set in pre-World War II Austria, the series chronicles novice nun Maria's transformation into the beloved tutor of the Trapp children, weaving songs into their daily lives and slowly forming an unbreakable family bond. The story follows the family's growing peril under Nazi pressure and their eventual emigration from their Alpine homeland. Eri Ito's gentle opening theme Hohoemi no Mahou pairs beautifully with the show's painterly visuals and rich choral pieces, marking the series as one of the most musically heartfelt entries in the World Masterpiece Theater catalog.
