Adachigahara

A theatrical short film by Tezuka Productions, directed by Hisashi Sakaguchi and adapted from one of Osamu Tezuka's 'Lion Books' manga stories. On a desolate frontier planet a young Space Patrol officer encounters a mysterious woman living alone in the wilderness, in a science-fictional reworking of the classic Noh tale Adachigahara. The 25-minute film captures the chill loneliness of the future world and the depths of human regret through atmospheric visuals and sound rather than dialogue, leaving a haunting impression on its audience. Tezuka's parable-like sensibility and Sakaguchi's delicate direction combine to produce a quietly devastating piece of arthouse anime.
