TV anime broadcast on NHK General TV, co-produced by Toho and Gainax, loosely based on Jules Verne's 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' and 'The Mysterious Island.' Directed overall by Hideaki Anno with later episodes helmed by Shinji Higuchi. Set against the 1889 Paris Exposition, mysterious circus girl Nadia and inventor boy Jean are swept into a grand adventure with the Grandis Gang and the Neo-Atlantean Empire, all centered on Nadia's enigmatic blue gem 'Blue Water.' Packed with the submarine Nautilus, Captain Nemo, and the lost Atlantean civilization, the series interweaves SF spectacle with the heartfelt growth of its young leads, becoming a landmark forerunner to Anno's later works.
