Theatrical anime adapting Fujio F. Fujiko's SF romantic-comedy manga 'Chimpui,' co-produced by Shin-Ei Animation, Shogakukan, Chuokoron-sha, and TV Asahi, distributed by Toho. Building on the TV series in which Mal-seijin Chimpui and Wandayu watch over Earth girl Eri as a candidate queen, the 40-minute medium-length film opens with an invitation to a desert film set on Mar to shoot a biography of Eri. When the girl Lilin cast as Eri is injured, Eri herself must play her own role - a metafictional twist. With Fujiko's signature fantasy-tinged, heartfelt romantic comedy and the festive feel of a spring Toei Anime Fair triple bill, this is a charming entry.
