MAROKO

まろこ

Aired: 1990

Experimental theatrical anime in which Mamoru Oshii re-edited his six-episode OVA 'Goshogun-sama Banbanzai!' into a 90-minute feature, produced by Studio Pierrot and distributed by SPO. The absurdist comedy follows the Yotsuya household, whose lives are progressively upended by the sudden appearance of a self-proclaimed 'time-traveling granddaughter' named Maroko. Hallmarks of Oshii's style - garrulous dialogue, blurring of fact and fiction, theatrical framing - clearly foreshadow his later works such as 'Patlabor' and 'Ghost in the Shell.' Oshii wrote, directed, and originated the work, with animation direction by Satoru Utsunomiya and music by Kenji Kawai. A must-see for Oshii fans. (C)Bandai Visual / Studio Pierrot
