From the Apennines to the Andes (Film)

Aired: 1980

A theatrical anime produced by Nippon Animation and released through the Shochiku network, a film re-edited from the 1976 Fuji TV World Masterpiece Theater second television series. Based on the episode From the Apennines to the Andes contained in Edmondo De Amicis's novel Heart (Cuore), it depicts the boy Marco, set in late-nineteenth-century Genoa, Italy, traveling alone across the South American continent in search of his mother, who went to Argentina for work and fell out of contact. Touching the kindness and harshness of people wherever he goes, and wavering many times between hope and despair, Marco continues his journey in an indomitable story of seeking his mother, reconstructed for the big screen by condensing the famous scenes of the television series. A moving film version in which Isao Takahata's direction and the lyricism characteristic of the World Masterpiece Theater come to fruition.
