A TV anime produced by Nippon Sunrise, based on an original concept by Hajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino (Yoshiyuki Tomino), with Tomino as chief director. The progenitor of the real-robot genre, it aired in 43 episodes on Nagoya TV (TV Asahi network) from April 7, 1979 to January 26, 1980. In Universal Century 0079, against the war of independence between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, civilian boy Amuro Ray of Side 7 becomes by chance the pilot of the new mobile suit Gundam, depicting the tragedy of war and human growth through battles with rival Char Aznable. Cancelled early due to poor ratings, it became a social phenomenon through reruns and the hit Gunpla model kits, becoming the origin of the vast Gundam franchise. (C)Sotsu/Sunrise
