Ushiro no Shoumen Daare
Aired: 1991
A theatrical animated feature directed by Seiji Arihara, adapted from Kayoko Ebina's autobiographical essay. The film follows young Kayoko from her warm, working-class childhood in pre-war Tokyo through the firebombing of the city, where she loses her family in a single night, and onward into the painful years of survival and reconstruction. The traditional children's song Kagome Kagome is woven through the narrative as a quiet emblem of innocence lost, while the film's restrained, contemplative tone separates it from typical children's entertainment. Critically praised as one of Japan's important anti-war animated works, the film moved postwar audiences deeply. Eiko Shiratori's theme Ai wa Itsumo, sung with warmth and tenderness, supports the film's prayer-like message of remembrance and hope.
