Jean-Jacques Burnel
Artist
Jean-Jacques Burnel is a French-British musician best known as the bassist and lead vocalist of the British punk rock band The Stranglers. He also works as a solo artist and is acclaimed for a bass-playing style that produces a distinctive undulating groove. In anime, he composed and performed 'We Were Lovers', the opening theme, and 'You won't see me coming', the ending theme, of Gonzo's sci-fi anime Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. Director Mahiro Maeda personally traveled to London to meet him and ask him to provide the songs. The melancholic yet dignified melodies support the weighty atmosphere of a work that transposes Dumas's original world into a space opera.
