Fate/Zero is adapted from the novel written by Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus, conceived as a prequel to TYPE-MOON's visual novel Fate/stay night. It depicts the Fourth Holy Grail War, in which seven mages and seven Servants fight to the death over the Holy Grail, an omnipotent wish-granting device. The clashing convictions of Kiritsugu Emiya, Tokiomi Tohsaka and Kirei Kotomine reveal the origins of the story that leads into Fate/stay night.
Animation production is by ufotable, widely praised for battle sequences that fuse meticulous hand-drawn work with digital effects. Yuki Kajiura composed the music, and Ei Aoki served as director.
