Based on the manga by Ayune Araragi, the series follows Rinna Isshiki — an Anglo-Japanese police prodigy who skipped grades to graduate at the top of her university class and became an inspector at the Modern Crime Specialized Investigation Headquarters at the age of 17. Brilliant and unflappable, she has earned the nickname "Steel Rinna" — until she is inexplicably struck by a racing heartbeat whenever she is around the bumbling private detective Meishi Rokutanda. To uncover the cause, the two embark on a secret pretend-couple arrangement, kicking off a slapstick yet earnest romance between two novices grappling with the difficult case called "first love."

Born and raised in England to English and Japanese parents. After skipping grades and graduating at the top of her university class, she moved to Japan and became an inspector at 17. Sharp-minded and unflappable, she is dubbed "Steel Rinna" — yet she is plagued by an inexplicable racing heart that occurs only when she is around Meishi.
Meishi Rokutanda (CV: Shuichiro Umeda)
Affiliation: Modern Crime Specialized Investigation Headquarters / Rank: Contracted detective
Runs the Rokutanda Detective Agency while also working as a contracted detective. A straightforward and earnest young man with a strong desire to help others, yet treated as a bumbler by the regular detectives. Drawn to Rinna's straightforward dedication to helping people, he applied for the contracted position hoping to "be of use to Inspector Isshiki."
