A TV anime produced by Studio DEEN. Based on the doujin game series "Higurashi: When They Cry" by Ryukishi07, this new animation was announced to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original TV anime's first broadcast in 2006. Set in the fictional village of Hinamizawa in 1983, the story follows Keiichi Maebara, a boy who transfers from the city, as he is drawn into the terrifying secrets hidden within the village during his peaceful days with newfound friends. The annual Watanagashi festival night brings serial mysterious deaths, the ancient curse of Oyashiro-sama, and the sudden transformation of trusted companions. A suspense horror depicting an inescapable chain of tragedy. The original cast returns, including Soichiro Hoshi as Keiichi Maebara, Mai Nakahara as Rena Ryugu, Satsuki Yukino as Mion and Shion Sonozaki, Mika Kanai as Satoko Hojo, and Yukari Tamura as Rika Furude.
