MAO is a TV anime produced by Sunrise (Bandai Namco Filmworks), based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday. This marks the first Sunrise production of a Takahashi work since the Inuyasha series. Nanoka Kiba is the sole survivor of an accident that killed her entire family when she was in first grade. As a ninth-grader, she passes through the accident site again and is transported to the Taisho era, where she meets a young onmyoji named Mao who tells her "You're a yokai, aren't you?" The next day, Nanoka's physical abilities awaken. A Taisho-era supernatural romance centered on the theme of "curses." Broadcast on NHK General in two consecutive cours. Directed by Teruo Sato with series composition by Yuko Kakihara, character design by Yoshihito Hishinuma, and music by Shu Kanematsu.
