Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is a TV anime with an original story by Tsutomu Nihei, known for Knights of Sidonia and BLAME!. Produced as a commemorative work for Polygon Pictures' 40th anniversary, with a manga adaptation by Itoe Takemoto serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Sirius. In a world where a vast "Snow Sea" covers the entire surface, people barely survive on the "Canopy" spreading from colossal "Orbital Trees." Kaina, a boy living atop the Canopy, encounters Ririha, a princess of Atland searching for the legendary "Sage." Together they descend to the surface, becoming embroiled in the conflict between Atland and Valgia over water resources as they unravel the mysteries of a dying world.
