Yo-kai Watch is a TV anime based on Level-5's video game, aired from January 2014. Produced by OLM, the series follows ordinary elementary schooler Keita Amano who receives a "Yo-kai Watch" from the yokai butler Whisper, allowing him to see and befriend yokai hidden in everyday life. Characters like the cat yokai Jibanyan and Komasan became explosively popular among children, turning into a social phenomenon in 2014. The franchise expanded into a massive media mix project spanning games, toys, and theatrical films.
